Year-round growing

Greenhouse unlock, cost, and layout

A greenhouse turns seasonal planting into a permanent part of the farm, but the price and interior footprint make the first layout decision worth planning.

Complete Upgrade the Carpenter’s Shop, then buy a greenhouse blueprint from the Carpenter. The small interior is 5×5; the large interior is 10×10. Crops and fruit trees inside produce outside their usual seasons.

Small or large: the real cost difference

The small greenhouse is the sensible first purchase when the goal is a compact patch of off-season ingredients. The large version costs twice as much and asks for twice the materials, but its four-times-larger growing area is much easier to plan around trees and repeating crops.

The white and wood versions change the look, not the growing dimensions. Choose the exterior that suits the farm instead of expecting a hidden production bonus.

Use permanent space for crops you keep needing

A greenhouse is most valuable when it solves a recurring shortage. Keep a few tiles for ingredients that appear in favorite recipes or gifts, then use the rest for crops that would otherwise force a long wait for the right season. The crop and forageables tool is useful here because it lets you compare the normal season before committing indoor space.

Do not fill every tile on the first day. A narrow path makes harvesting comfortable and leaves room to change the plan when a new recipe, museum goal, or relationship route suddenly makes a different crop useful.

Fruit trees need a deliberate grid

Fruit trees bear year-round inside the greenhouse, but each one uses a 3×3 footprint. That fits awkwardly inside a 5×5 room and leaves gaps that cannot be treated like a full field. In a small greenhouse, one tree is a commitment; in a large greenhouse, placing trees along an edge keeps the center flexible.

Those gaps are not necessarily wasted. Use the reachable edges for shorter crop runs or leave them open so harvesting never becomes a maze. The best layout is the one you can read quickly, not the one that looks full in a screenshot.

Harvest before moving the building

A greenhouse can be removed through its building menu and rebuilt elsewhere. The blueprint and construction materials return, but crops still growing inside are destroyed. Harvest anything ready, clear the rest deliberately, and only then move it.

Because the materials come back while the plants do not, the safest farm plan reserves an outdoor location early and delays construction until that route feels permanent. If you are still reshaping the farm, mark the space with paths or inexpensive furniture before spending the blueprint.
