How animal breeding works

Put an opposite-sex pair of the same species in one Medium Barn or Coop, leave an open slot, and feed both their heart treats on the same day. Birth or hatching follows four days later.

Quick answer

A valid pair must be the same species, one male and one female, housed together in the same Medium Barn or Medium Coop with at least one empty space. Give both animals their respective heart treats during the same in-game day and look for the stork symbol that indicates success.

Breeding requirements

The breeding section of the Fields of Mistria Wiki ranching entry lists every setup condition together. If breeding does not register, check the pair, building, space, and same-day treat timing rather than assuming the four-day timer has begun.

Requirements before the timer starts
SpeciesBoth parents must be the same species.
SexOne parent must be male and the other female.
HousingBoth must share the same Medium Barn or Medium Coop.
CapacityThe building must have at least one additional empty space.
Treat timingGive both animals their heart treats on the same day.
Success cueA stork symbol appears beside their status in the Animal menu.
Birth timingFour in-game days after the successful treats.

Source-checked order of operations

  1. Select a valid pair

Choose a male and female of one species. Coat color does not change the basic pairing requirement.

  2. Share one medium building

Place both parents in the same Medium Barn or Coop and verify that one animal slot remains open for the offspring.

  3. Feed both heart treats that day

The same-day rule matters. The offspring's sex and color are locked when the two treats are given.

  4. Confirm the stork symbol

The Animal menu cue indicates that breeding succeeded. Birth or, for the applicable Coop animals, hatching occurs four days later.

Color and production are separate

Breeding colors are cosmetic. The resulting color does not alter what an animal produces or its production cycle. That means a higher color tier is not evidence of better output. The source treats production tiers as a different system tied to animal care and hearts.

Exact coat color is selected from the available colors in the resulting tier, and the source says parent color combinations do not follow mixing logic. This guide therefore does not prescribe combinations such as two named coat colors to force a third.

Wiki-observed tier behavior

The following is reported by the wiki as observed breeding behavior, not guaranteed here through a fresh 1.0 test. For a lower parent tier x, same-tier parents are described as T(x) + T(x) producing T(x+1). Adjacent tiers are described as T(x) + T(x+1) producing either T(x+1) or T(x+2); the wiki characterizes the higher result as about a 50% outcome.

Tier 6 seasonal colors are the exception. The wiki reports a chance from T5 + T5, a smaller chance from T4 + T5, and a higher but still non-guaranteed rate from T6 + T5. It reports T6 + T6 as the route that produces T6. The seasonal variant corresponds to the season when the parents receive their treats—the conception day—not the later birth day.

Observation boundary

Tier formulas and rates above reproduce wiki observations and should not be treated as independently measured 1.0 guarantees. The basic pair, housing, empty-space, treat, stork, and four-day rules are kept separate from those observed color-tier outcomes.
